The bereaved family of Mr. Eric Asem at Twifo Praso in the Twifo Atti-morkwa district of central region are linking the painful death of their one week old daughter to alleged negligence of madam Justina Acquah a nurse at Twifo Praso poly clinic who administered a one week shoulder vaccination on their child.

According to Mr. Eric Asem the father of the deceased, his wife Vida Asem attended antenatal care at Saint Florence clinic, a private health facility in Twifo Praso and was delivered there.

After one week of delivery, his wife and two other family members took the baby to Twifo Praso Poly Clinic to take the one week shoulder injection.

Mr. Eric Asem disclosed that, some few hours after taking the injection, they observed some pauses in the child’s breathing. The child body temperature also instantly rised, she could not take breast milk anymore. So the parents rush her back to the facility where the injection was administered in the next morning. They were upon arrival referred to Twifo Praso district hospital where she passed on.

According to Mr. Eric Asem, he strongly believes that madam Justina Acquah the nurse, administered wrong vaccine on the child that has resulted in the untimely death of his daughter who was in a good condition before receiving the injection.

Further checks

The issue of the alleged injection causing the death of the one week baby has been investigated thoroughly and the summary of the findings are below;

My team started the investigation upon the receipt of the information, we visited the bereaved family, where she was receiving Ante Natal Care, where she delivered and where she received her first vaccination.
The child received BCG vaccine which is given to children from birth to 2 weeks after birth and sometimes more than two weeks depending on other factors.
BCG normally has fever as the main side effect which is normally resolved by giving paracetamol.

The child after receiving the vaccines was normal and from the mother she had some fever in the evening and was given some medication. The child coincidentally had some difficulty in breathing so she was sent to the Twifo Praso Polyclinic of which she was referred to the district hospital.

At the hospital, she was diagnosed “aspiration pneumonia “ which does not have a connection with BCG vaccination.

The child was subsequently referred to KATH after spending some days there but she unfortunately passed on.

In conclusion, the vaccination did not cause the death of the baby, the baby had the condition which could probably be as a result of handling at home.

  1. Vaccines do not kill hence will plead with the deceased family to stop blaming the nurse who vaccinated the child.Thank you .my condolences

  2. As public health nurses we know that any AEFI is accepted but its good investigations were done n the nurse set free.
The funny part is where they think every single vaccine should be administed by a different nurse
    Lol

    1. Yes it soo funny. In the vaccine carrier you may have different antigens say pfizer, J&J, Moderna, astra and others in the case of Covid vaccination, it is the same nurse that gives all this vaccination but the nurse at all time knows which attigen to be given and at what time. Why don’t we also consider the fact that the death of this child is a coincidence even though the child was vaccinated.

  3. This issue needs further probing. The family has their own prejudice of vaccine and so any little thing can be attributed to it. It’s so unfortunate for this to happen to our colleague but we hope the truth comes out

  4. The issues of medical negligence leveled against health practitioners are becoming an every day thing. On many occasions we’re able to find reasons to absolve ourselves – on other occasions it gets to the news with skewed narratives.
We must sit up in our duty of care to patients otherwise one of these days we might find ourselves in a very bad situation. The public is gradually loosing confidence in our health system ( Of course they’ve their own fat share of the blame for various reasons). The attitude and practices of some of our colleagues – which we all know must be checked . Yes, working conditions are bad but once we’ve found ourselves in this position of care , we must do better. It’s the lives of human beings with families.
Seriously, I’m always unsettled when sending my child or wife to the hospital (just being honest ) because of the way I see some colleagues work .
We’ve got to do more , learn more , focus more and empathize more – it’s increasingly becoming difficult to do these , but let’s remember, we’re taking care of human beings. The sanctity of life cannot be overemphasized.
Just my bit but not entirely on this reported case

  5. The mother recounted herself that the same nurse injects one week, two weeks and even nine months babies and nothing happens as per vaccination protocols. Why should they hurriedly anticipate that the vaccine killed their baby?
Anyway the director gave the final diagnosis and the circumstances that let to the death of the child.

This is to say that vigilance and proper and timely documentation are key in nursing these days and nurses and midwives must take keen note of them.

Condolences to the bereaved family 🙏🙏🙏

  6. To clear all doubt, they should see the pathologist on this. These reportage causes some of us to fear for our lives as nurses.

  7. I think it’s about time nurses has to be careful, any allegations are directed to us, why?

I think any false allegation this time around should follow judicial prosecution otherwise we are safe in this country

I think any false allegation this time around should follow judicial prosecution otherwise we are not safe in this country

  8. Why should 2 other relatives follow her for vaccination Keke?they want to kill the child but needed something to blame it on…they should do their homework…

  9. Hmm so now different CHNs should be administering different vaccines..
My dear no staffs ooo… Hmm
We should just be careful when choosing vaccines from the vaccine carrine..
Thank God the doctor’s have diagnosed
Our Condolences to the bereaved family
