The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives’ Association (GRNMA) led by Madam Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo as President has again come to the aid of one of their own who has been battling a health condition requiring neurosurgery.

The beneficiary, a young midwife has been battling a condition involving the waist and spine for a while now but the unavailability of funds has since been a barrier for the appropriate intervention which is required from a tertiary facility

According to the victim, who works in the Lawra Municipal Hospital of the Upper West Region, she has had to battle with the chronic pains associated with the condition often aggravated by the demands of her job as a midwife and from her home as a mother and a wife

She has often managed the pain with some pain medications but it has come to a point where it became rather unbearable, hence the need for the Association’s intervention.

She is due for surgery at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives’ Association (GRNMA) represents the voice of all nurses and midwives both locally and nationally.

It’s both a Trade Union as it holds the Collective Bargaining Certificate on behalf of all Nurses and Midwives practicing in Ghana and also an Association as it has some of the most telling welfare policies any union has ever put in place for its members

The cheque amount of Fifty-Six thousand Ghana cedis (GHC56,000.00) donated to Madam Rita Donchiir is a testament of such brilliant policy interventions the association has in place for members

When asked how the association is able to mobilize such amount of money for a single individual, the Assistant Public Relations Officer of the Association in the Upper West Region, Mr. Prosper Konlan Yenpaab who accompanied the Assistant Regional Treasurer (Mr. Cletus Limeng) to present the cheque to the member in Lawra explained that, 6% of the total dues paid by members meant for administrative works is set aside in a Call Account as Health Fund support for the member. “The member does not have to pay anything extra to have this in place”, he stressed.

The donation, though the highest coming into the region since the Fund was established, is one of several donations that came from the Fund to members most of whom are on their feet now and back to work.

When he was contacted on phone, the Regional Chairman, Mr. Lawrence Bagrmwin was worried that even though the Collective Bargaining Agreement signed between the Ministry of Health and its agencies and the Association acting on behalf of its members enjoins the employer to take up to 50% of the total cost of treatments such as the case of Ms Donchiir, the implementation has been a huge challenge over the period.

He called on the employer to sit up and respect the provisions of the Conditions of Service as signed in the interest of industrial peace and harmony.

He said, it was sad that, providers of care are neglected by the employer when they need that care themselves.

On her part, the beneficiary of the intervention showed gratitude to God Almighty for the life of the President of the Association and her team across the structures (district to region and headquarters). She said she was surprised that people still found reason to chastise the association rather than critique its brilliant interventions for the greater good. She called on all nurses and midwives across the country to get involved in the activities of the association everywhere they are, as it’s the only sure way one could get to fully appreciate its existence.

She hope to be back on her feet in the shortest possible time to continue to do her bit towards the growth of the association
