It was reported on Monday 18th March, 2024 that Accra New Town D/A Basic School in the Wassa East district of western region has now become a site for illegal mining exploration which is posing danger to teachers and learners in the school.

It is alleged that the Queen mother of Accra New Town Naa Akwei Kua I is actively involved in such galamsey activities in the area.

The district chief executive for Wassa East district Hon. Emmanuel in collaboration with the minerals commission Tarkwa, yesterday evening invaded the Accra New Town community particularly the illegal mining site.

Unfortunately, the illegal miners had already ran away but hid their excavators elsewhere in the community but the taskforce were able to identity the hidden excavators and dysfunctionalised everything on it.

Later, Hon. Emmanuel Boakye the Wassa East DCE led the taskforce to the residence of the Queen mother of Accra New Town where she was arrested.

Reasons for her arrest according to the DCE include: allowing illegal miners to operate on the premises of a school, allowing the illegal miners to hide their excavators in the community to ran away and her involvement in illegal mining as a queen mother.

The DCE has charged the queen mother to produce the land owner who she claims to have sold the land to the illegal miners and also produce the illegal miners who are currently on the run.

The Queen mother of Accra New Town Naa Akwei Kua I is currently in the police custody at the Wassa East district police command.

Hon. Emmanuel Boakye again sounded a signal of caution to the other chiefs in the Wassa East district who are also leading the activities of illegal mining to desist from it because the law is no respecter of anyone.
