ACCRA NEW TOWN D/A BASIC SCHOOL IN THE WASSA EAST DISTRICT TURNED INTO GALAMSEY ZONE, ENDANGERING THE LIVES OF TEACHERS AND LEARNERS

The premises of Accra New Town D/A Basic School in the Wassa East district of western region has become a site for galamsey operation.

These illegal mining activities is being taken place just about 8 metres from the school.

The teachers who spoke with us off record expressed anxieties about many pits that have been created by the galamseyers around the the school which are filled and covered with water which can entrap some of the students particularly during break periods when the children are playing.

Not only the teachers who are too perturbed about the situation but also the residents of Accra New Town. The intensity of the fears in the residents and the parents whose children attend Accra New Town D/A Basic School in the area keep rising because the illegal miners keep expanding their operational area into the school and it appears that the authorities have remained conspicuously silent about the situation since this started.

Some of the residents who spoke with peace News blamed the DCE for Wassa East district Hon. Emmanuel Boakye and the Queen mother of Accra New Town Naa Akweiye Kua I that they have allowed that to happen.

The Queen mother of Accra New Town Naa Akweiye Kua (I) in response said that she has no authority to stop anyone from doing galamsey in the school because she has not sold any land to anybody. It is the land owner who has sold his land to galamseyers to work on it she cares less whether or not the activities of the galamseyers will affect humanity.

Meanwhile, the DCE for Wassa East district Hon Emmanuel Boakye in a hasty response assured that, he would ensure that these galamseyers are arrested and prosecuted.
