Elmina’s most important economic activity is artisanal fishing, which relies on fish from inshore and offshore marine environments.
It is estimated that 75% of the town’s inhabitants earn a living directly or indirectly through fishing-related economic activities.
As a result, the Ghanaian government commissioned IMDC and Bellsea to undertake the rehabilitation and expansion of the Elmina Fishing Harbour to improve the fishing harbour and enhance Elmina’s tourist appeal.
The Elmina Fishing Harbour has east and west breakwaters, jetty wall, wharf wall, entrance arch. The harbour has enough berthing space and a deep marine access for the fleet of fishing boats and canoes, a 400 metres quay with 80-metre tourist quay to help boost its tourist appeal.
Other facilities include an administrator block, a fish market or commercial complex, fish net mending and auction hall, workshops and places of convenience, roads and pavements.
It also has a Day care and school, a sewage system, automobile and truck parking spaces, and a designated waste management area and electrical works.
The 30-month project commenced on the 1st of August 2020 and was completed on the 19th of January, 2023.
H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will commission and officially hand over the fishing harbour to Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) for commercial activities to commence on Friday 26thay, 2023.
