My reaction some weeks ago when I heard that conferences would be held later this year and early 2024 was one of disappointment.

I was not in tune with the position being advanced for late presidential and parliamentary primaries assigning reasons for my displeasure at the time.

Having weighed the pros and cons of the timing and what could actually go wrong if they are held much earlier, I must admit that the decision reached is the best.

We almost have the same number of MPs as the NDC, and we cannot guarantee that all our MPs would win their primaries. MPs who may lose in the primaries may not have the desire to continue discharging their parliamentary duties as expected.

Assuming some of these MPs who have been at loggerheads with the party lose their primaries, would they be in Parliament to support the 2024 budget to be passed? No way!

They would have no proclivity to support the government by way of passing the 2024 budgetary statement of the government.

This move is a smart one as it guards against the possibility of something like this happening. Budget would be passed before primaries in places where we occupy the seats.

We cannot take chances. We must get the government running in 2024. We can only or better do that when we are able to approve the 2024 budget.
