There’s this neighborhood cat that used to visit me daily; early in the morning and evening, that’s breakfast and supper times respectively… at the time of these visits ‘she’ was pregnant.

Because of her vulnerability during gestation, I treated her very well and she became my friend.

She later put to bed five beautiful kittens (rural characteristics).

She kept coming to my place for some time and later brought her kittens along in the evenings for supper.

I kept my philanthropy up and continued to feed and pet them.

As the kittens grew they all disappeared. I would wait in the evening with expectation that my canine friends would show up but to no avail.

So I’d leave their food outside my door, in the hope they’d show up later at night to eat.

Indeed they did come to eat as I sometimes saw them through the window. Once they noticed me opening my door, they would ran away.

Fast forward, the mother cat became pregnant again, and she resumed visiting me again like always… even when I locked my door, she would keep scratching at it until I opened and served her food.

My pain is that, a lot of people have the prejudice that an Erverh (Ewe) man cannot just be nice to neighbourhood cats for nothing! Apparently this cat thinks same.

She knows I cannot do anything to her during her pregnancy or while she breastfed her kittens, but can’t trust me once her kittens had grown and she was just meat.

Meanwhile, my intentions were pure and I only enjoyed her company.

Indeed even animals have prejudice against Ewe folk!

  1. It is said that any dog could recognize people who eat dog meat and bark at them consistently whenever they are passing by. Could the same be said about this your canine cat? Cats are like that by nature. I have also had a similar experience with my neighbor’s cat.

  2. A great one there. I would have more to say if it was a dog.

You also have your own prejudice about the behaviour of the cat.

1.Could it not be that her visit during pregnancy and lactating is because she is not active enough to hunting for preys in the jungle and thus needs IMF support ?

2.Is it also possible that during lactating period she needs to stay close to the kittens (catlets according to my son) in order to feed and protect them?

Every living creature in these two critical stages mentioned earlier, will usually adopts certain measures to conserve energy and safeguard its young ones.

So, your conclusion of mistrust could be traced to the door steps of your own prejudice. 😃😃😃😃
