TOO COLD TO LOVE AGAIN
(Episode Four)
“Young man, let me make it abundantly clear to you that you are not welcome in our home. Daphne has a very responsible gentleman as her soon-to-be husband. Do not ruin this for us!” her mum told George just before she left the hospital.
George offered nothing in his defense. It was pointless. It was not as if he even knew her well, let alone being in a relationship with her.
“What did my mother say to you?” Daphne asked, concerned about what her overprotective mother might have said to George.
“Nothing to worry yourself about. You need your strength back. That’s what should be our paramount interest” George told her.
Daphne knew her mum wouldn’t spare George from her acerbic tongue. For whatever reasons, her mum saw a threat in George. George looked too innocent to be a threat to her mum and whatever was going through her mind. Daphne couldn’t understand her mum at this time.
George didn’t bother to enter the house. It was a magnificent edifice at Kenten. It had all the designs of a mansion. Well, they were rich people. Daphne tried all she could, George didn’t budge.
George was afraid of her tigress mother. Besides, what business did he have with Daphne and her family? He asked himself. Daphne took his contact. George left.
For over a month, George didn’t hear from Daphne. He did not have her number as well because as at the time they were saying their goodbyes, she was still without a phone. Maybe, just like her mum said, he didn’t belong to their class.
Life is like this. Sometimes, you meet some people just once in your lifetime, other times, you meet them again. He dispelled these thoughts from his mind. Daphne had forgotten about him. At least, he saved her life. He was happy with it.
Three months later, he got a call. “Hello, George, this is Daph. Daphne!”
He was lost. “Which Daphne, please?”.
She was disappointed. “Your own Daphne, the lady whose life you saved some three months or so ago. You have soon forgotten about me?”
He grimaced. “Oh oh oh! I remember now! Where have you been? Why has it taken you forever to call me? I would have called you long ago if I had your phone number. I am happy to have heard from you”.
“It wasn’t deliberate ooo!” She explained. My mum took your number and hid it. I wrote it on a paper and she took it. She said she did not want me to call you or see you and that you look like an opportunist. My mother is something else. I will tell you all about when I see you. Where do you stay? Send me your location”
They met.
