Part 1 of 3.

Some broken hearts never mend. Some memories never fade. Some tears will never dry, but my love for you will never die. Words of that song by Don Williams had been his favourite recital anytime I was going through a hard time.

He had a captivating baritone voice and spoke quite slowly as though being cautious to select the right words to communicate.

He always said those lines while looking me straight in the eye like he meant every single alphabet. I cannot remember any rough moment I went through during our three years of friendship, dating and courtship that Kay was not present to say those powerful lines to help me through.

Tired frustrated african wife ignoring angry black despot husband arguing blaming upset woman of problems, jealous man shouting at sad girlfriend, family fight and controlling boyfriend, disrespect

It was the last part “my love for you will never die” … that always did the trick! Even those times when he was schooling abroad, Kay would spend hours on end with me on video call to ensure I smiled before hanging up.

His love was everything I could wish for in my entire world. I simply loved the way he loved me. But today, here I am going through the hardest time ever and my Kay is nowhere to be found.

Our relationship had been quite a smooth one. I served at church as a cleaner and he, an usher. I had seen him several times at church going about his duties but never really paid any serious attention to him until we met one Saturday after a wedding.

I stayed behind with other church cleaners to clean up the premises and get it ready for service the next day.

I was on my way to a dustbin when I tripped and fell on the staircase outside the church hall scattering the rubbish I was going to empty.

He was on the phone just around the stairs and run to my aid when he heard me scream. I noticed that his phone fell from his hands but he paid no heed to it and asked if I was ok while gently trying to lift me off the floor. I whimpered in pain as I staggered to gain some balance. I had twisted my ankle and was in so much pain.

I couldn’t even limp so he offered to carry me at his back and sent me inside the church.
He later drove me home and paid me a visit daily until my sick leave of two weeks ended and I could go back to work. By this time, my parents had taken so much liking to him and always looked forward to his visits. All family members were captivated by his humility.

Despite his busy schedules at work, where he worked as an electrical engineer, he made time to attend most of our family gatherings where he would be seen willingly arranging seats and running errands to ensure that everything went well.

Little wonder a year on when we decided to take our friendship to deeper level, they willingly gave their blessings…
