The Nigerian movie industry has been struck by another tragic loss following the news of the passing of veteran actress Cynthia Okereke.

Cynthia Okereke, 63, who was kidnapped a year ago by unknown kidnappers, died on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, leaving the entertainment industry and fans in mourning.

Actor and filmmaker Joseph Okechukwu took to Instagram to share the heartbreaking news on Wednesday.

In his Instagram post, Joseph Okechukwu paid a heartfelt tribute to Cynthia Okereke, expressing his deep sorrow and shock at her untimely demise.

He shared a photo of the late actress and mourned the fact that he was on the verge of finalizing travel arrangements for her to join him in completing a project they had started together.

According to the thespian, the news of her passing has been one of the most difficult challenges he has faced in recent times.

He wrote “REST IN PEACE, Nwanyi oma. I’m shattered beyond words.

“The fact that I was about to pay for your flight ticket to come and finish what we started only to hear you went to be with Lord just last night is one of the toughest things I’ve had to deal with in recent times.”

Mr. Okechukwu described Cynthia Okereke as an exceptional person whom he had known for more than two decades

“I pray I’m able to recover from the shock. Life is really just a mist. One minute you have it, the next you don’t. For the more than 20 years that I’ve known you, you’ve been such an amazing, decent and lovely soul to be around. Words fail me. May your gentle soul rest on till we meet again in glory,” he added.

Almost a year ago, Nollywood actress Cynthia Okereke, along with her colleague Clemson Cornell, also known as Agbogidi, endured a harrowing kidnapping incident while working in Enugu State, Nigeria

After their release, Okereke bravely spoke out about the traumatic experience and revealed the challenges she faced during her week-long captivity, including the deprivation of food and water.

She revealed, “My BP is high, but to God be the glory for all of you. Your effort and your prayers ensured that Cynthia is alive. I will act for you people and continue to work for you. They thought I was going away, but I am not. For a good one week, I was there without water or food. But today, I say God to you be all the glory forever and ever,”

Cynthia Okereke’s passing marks a significant loss for the Nigerian film industry.

She made a name for herself in the world of Nollywood with roles including Prof John Bull, Osuofia In London, A Fool at 40 and many others.

Throughout her career, she showcased her versatility as an actress and earned the admiration of both colleagues and fans alike. Her contributions to the industry will be remembered and celebrated for years to come
