Sunon Asogli Power Limited terminates appointments of 3 local union leaders.

I cannot get the head or tail of the strike action called by Organized Labour with respect to the termination of appointments of some union members by Sunon Asogli Power Limited.

In a letter signed by Dr. Yaw Baah, the General Secretary of the TUC, on March 2, 2023, Sunon Asogli Power Limited terminated the appointments of three local union leaders including the Chairman, Secretary and Assistant Secretary of the Ghana Mineworkers Union of TUC for joining a trade union and leading the union at the enterprise level.

As a result of this, TUC had given a notice of a nationwide strike action by Organized Labour to begin on Monday, July 10, 2023.

Though the strike action has been put on hold, the TUC, by this action, was holding the nation to ransom over a matter it can deal with at the level of the entity the three were working for.

In any event, Sunon Asogli is a private entity and, therefore, any issue relating to workers and their rights must be dealt with at that level by TUC. The state cannot suffer for a sin it did not commit.

Is it also not strange that the TUC would take up this issue of the three workers at the power plant but has never done same for other workers in other fields whose rights have been violated?

Many teachers, nurses, doctors, etc, have suffered some forms of abuses, harassments, discriminations and dismissals but we never heard from the TUC.

The selective manner in which the TUC is handling this issue in relation to others makes this call of the body uncalled for.

Are we to believe that the TUC was embarking on this action as a result of the topmost positions held by the three beleaguered workers?

This strike action was uncalled for from the get go and the sooner the TUC leadership realizes it, the better for all of us.
