(Episode Ten)
George went to bed feeling elated, happy that Daphne had kissed him. A burning sensation coursed through his system when Daphne kissed him even though he tried to hide it.
Did she notice it? He asked himself. Well, what was important was that at least she felt something for him. Did she? He wondered.
The proposition. Absurd it sounded to him. At first he took it as something made in jest. The kiss proved to be the icing on the cake.
Maybe, I am just a means to an end. Maybe, I am just the guy who would be the weapon to defeat her parents and those of Louis for her liberty.
The happiness he felt seeped out when these thoughts took control of his mind. Even the social class was millions of poles apart.
It was an impossible dream. He allowed the raining falling outside and beating merciless at his rooftop with its attendant cold weather to sweep him into the surreal world of sleep.
George was apprehensive when Daphne refused to pick his calls for the fifth consecutive time. What could be the matter? He asked nobody in particular.
‘Maybe, she is having second thoughts about yesterday, the kiss and the proposition she made. I guess I have been a dreamer all night long’ he soliloquized.
She returned the call. “George, sorry. My mum was not well. She was rushed to Holy Family and has been sent to the Sunyani Government Hospital. I am currently in Sunyani. Will call you if anything comes up” Daphne said and hanged up. George was relieved to hear from her.
“George, mummy is in a critical condition. She needs blood transfusion but her type of blood is difficult to come by. May I know your blood group?” Daphne asked him.
“I can’t tell. I don’t know my blood group. But I can come over and have it checked. What is her blood group?” He asked her. She said her mum’s blood group was AB. Whatever it was, he didn’t know.“I am on my way to Sunyani. Will see you soon”. She was happy about his willingness to help. Almost an hour later, he was at the hospital.
“I am happy to announce that he matches with that of your mum. We can go ahead to draw some for her” the doctor said.
“My son, thank you very much for your kindheartedness. As I said, I was hasty in my judgement of you. You have been a life saver. First, you saved Daphne and now me too. I’m eternally grateful for these two acts” Daphne’s mum said, with tears of happiness in her eyes.
